Selma Coulthard was born in Alice Springs and grew up at Urrampinyi (Tempe Downs), until she was removed by the government, and placed her in a mission boarding home at Hermannsburg. She saw the Namatjira brothers painting in Ntaria (Hermannsburg) and around tourism camps such as Glen Helen and Palm Valley, and it was around this time that her passion for art flourished.

 

Selma paints primarily in watercolours, she has a unique and detailed style that captures both the physical qualities of the land, such as the cracked earth, as well as the inseparable and ever-present spirituality of her country. Selma is incredibly proud of her Aboriginal heritage and this is communicated through her artwork.

 

Selma is a senior and significant watercolourist who has numerous exhibitions over the years, with her paintings being collected in many major public and private collections.
